Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy explains how Always Blue Software LLC (“we,” “us” or “our”) collects, uses and shares information when you use Votaroo, including the websites at votaroo.com and votaroo.app and the Votaroo apps for iPhone and Android (together, “Votaroo”).

Information we collect

Information you give us

• Your display name, which you enter when you start or join a vote. Everyone in that vote can see it.
• Decks you create: the deck's name, voting mode and the options in it.
• Your votes on each option. Others in the vote see how many options you have voted on and the result, not how you voted on each one.
• Messages you send us by email.

Location and place searches

If you choose “Near me,” we ask your device for its location once, when you start the vote, and use it only to search for restaurants nearby. If you choose “Somewhere else,” we use the place you type. We send the location or text to Google to run the search and do not store the location or the text. We store the resulting places in your deck so everyone sees the same options. You can turn location access off at any time in your browser or device settings.

Voting links and device storage

We don't require an account to vote. When you start or join a vote, we give your device a random voting key so you can come back to the same vote. It is kept in your browser's local storage or your phone's secure storage. We store only a scrambled (hashed) version of it, which can't be turned back into the key. If you deal a new round after a vote with no match, your key carries over to it. For votes you start, your device also remembers the place, craving and filters you searched (for “Near me”, only the distance, not your location), so you can deal a new round. That stays on your device and is never sent to us until you do.

Technical information

Our servers record standard technical information, such as your IP address and the time of each request, to operate Votaroo, keep it secure and limit abuse. We do not use advertising cookies; our analytics are described below.

Usage analytics

We use LogRocket, an analytics service, to understand how people use Votaroo and to find bugs. On votaroo.com, votaroo.app and in the apps, LogRocket records the screens you view and how you interact with them (taps, clicks, scrolling), which lets a visit be replayed as a reconstruction of the session, along with technical information such as your device, browser and approximate location derived from your IP address. What you type into forms is masked, and sign-in codes, sign-in sessions and voting keys are removed from what LogRocket receives. If you're signed in, the recording is linked to your account ID, name and email so we can help when you contact us.

If your browser sends a Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track signal, votaroo.com and votaroo.app don't load LogRocket and your visit isn't recorded.

Google Maps content

Restaurant names, ratings, prices, photos and details come from Google Maps. Photos load directly from Google's servers, so Google receives your IP address when your device shows them. When a vote ends in a match, we ask Google for that place's address, phone number and website. Google's use of information is governed by the Google Privacy Policy. We remove Google's content from decks after 30 days, keeping only Google's identifier for each place.

How we use information

• To run votes: showing options, counting votes and finding a match
• To keep Votaroo secure and prevent spam and abuse
• To respond to you and provide support
• To understand, in aggregate, how Votaroo is used and to improve it
• To comply with our legal obligations

We may create aggregated, de-identified information, such as which kinds of food are popular in an area, and share it with others. It does not identify you or any vote. We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.

How we share information

• Other people in your vote see your display name, your progress and the result.
• Amazon Web Services hosts Votaroo and stores its data in the United States.
• Google runs place searches and provides place details and photos, sign-in with Google, and notification delivery (Firebase Cloud Messaging).
• Apple provides Sign in with Apple and delivers notifications to iPhones.
• LogRocket provides the usage analytics described above.
• Google Fonts provides the website's fonts, so your browser connects to Google to load them.
• Apple and Google also distribute the apps through their app stores, under their own terms.
• Amazon Web Services sends our sign-in emails.

We may also disclose information if required by law or legal process, to protect the rights, property or safety of Votaroo, our users or others, or as part of a merger, acquisition or sale of all or part of our business.

Accounts

Voting never needs an account. To start more than one vote, you sign in with Apple, Google or an emailed code. We then keep your email address (if your sign-in provider shares it), your display name, the votes you started or joined, and a scrambled (hashed) version of your sign-in session. You can delete your account at any time from the account page in the app or at votaroo.app; your votes stay in other people's decks with your name replaced by "Former voter."

Notifications

If you allow notifications in the app, we store your device's notification token for the votes you're in, and send alerts through Google Firebase Cloud Messaging when someone joins or there's a match. You can turn them off in your phone's settings.

Coming soon

We plan to add advertising. We will update this policy to describe what it collects before it launches.

Data retention

We keep decks, display names and votes so you can come back to past votes. Google content is removed from decks after 30 days. Server logs are kept only as long as needed for security and operations. You can ask us to delete your information at any time, as described below.

Your rights and choices

Depending on where you live, including California and other U.S. states, the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, you may have the right to know about, access, correct or delete your personal information, to object to or restrict some processing, and to receive your information in a portable format. To make a request, email support@votaroo.com with your vote's code and display name. We may need to verify your request, and we will respond within the time required by law. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights. If you are in the EEA or UK, we rely on our legitimate interests in running Votaroo and keeping it secure, and you may complain to your local data protection authority.

Children

Votaroo is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

Votaroo is served only over encrypted HTTPS connections, voting keys are stored only in hashed form, and access to our systems is restricted. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, however.

International users

We are based in the United States. If you use Votaroo from elsewhere, your information is processed in the United States.

Changes

If we change this policy, we will update the date above. We will highlight material changes in Votaroo.
